Hyk Spyk's Silverchair Review

Okay here's my first attempt at a review and overall
information about my thoughts on Silverchair.
- Silverchair is Daniel Johns (Guitar & Vocals), Ben
Gillies (Drums), and Chris Joannou (Bass Guitar)
-
- I have all three of their CD's: Frogstomp (1995), Freak
Show (1997), and Neon Ballroom (1999)
-
- Frogstomp is a good first CD for the group from Australia.
With song's like Israel's Son and Pure Massacre they
showed that they can rock for teenagers. The bass on
Israel's Son is really cool, crank that up and watch out.
Frogstomp doesn't have the lyrics to the songs included.
-
- Freak Show, their second CD has some of the same kind of
shake your head kind of rock, but it also brings in some
softer and smoother songs. The recognizable songs are
Freak, Abuse Me, and the great song Cemetery. Freak Show
has the lyrics to the songs included.
-
- Neon Ballroom, their third CD shows off the problems of
stardom and some very personal lyrics. I didn't like this
CD the first time I listened to it, but now it's my
favorite of the three. My favorite song on this CD is
Anthem for the Year 2000. It isn't too complicated but it
says a lot. This CD is a little less rocky than the other
two in my opinion, but there are still some kicking songs
on this CD. Some other recognizable songs are Ana's Song
(Open Fire), Emotion Sickness, and Miss You Love. Neon
Ballroom has the lyrics to the songs included.
-
- On June 2, 1999, I saw Silverchair in concert at The
Boathouse in Norfolk, Virginia. The opening group was
Placebo,
who were also awesome. I have read another review of this
same show and they were highly critical of the whole
preformance. The opening group finished their set and we
waited, I got good position on the right side of the
stage about 15 feet away or so. I had my earplugs in, as
should everyone that wants to hear music when they get
older. The lights dimmed and the neon lights that were
rapped around the drums and the microphones shined really
bright. Everyone around said, that's pretty cool and we
couldn't wait. The actual order of the set is a little
sketchy, but I'll tell you the things that I do remember.
On Israel's Son, the bass made my whole chest ache, that
was cool. The mic. wasn't working or something, but to
Anthem for the Year 2000, Johns had the crowd sing the
whole first verse. I had not bought the Neon Ballroom
before I went to the concert, but enjoyed it very much.
They played a few of the slower songs and always came
back to the rockin' songs to get the crowd all hyped up.
All three seemed like madmen on the really fast songs, it
also seemed like they were having fun. I was about 100
degrees Fahrenheit at the Boathouse that night and I know
that they were really hot, it also looked like they had
some problems with their equipment. All these things
going on they put on a good show and if I have the
opportunity, I would go see them again.
-
- Go out and get their CD's, start with Neon Ballroom if
you don't like the real heavy stuff and work your way
back to Frogstomp. Also go see them in concert if you get
a chance, you will not be disappointed. I'm looking
forward to anything new that they are putting out there.
